Maura Chmielowiec, a senior at Rochester Institute of Technology, is the chief engineer of the Hot Wheelz Formula SAE Electric Race Car Team.

When Maura Chmielowiec was 14-years-old, she convinced her dad to buy a junky sports car that she could work on. She read auto repair books and eventually she fixed the car.
Now age 22, Chmielowiec is preparing to lead the first and only all-female team competing at the Formula Hybrid competition at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
“I started this whole project because I personally wanted to build a race car, but what has really kept me going throughout this process is the satisfaction from helping others realize their potential,” she said.
The Batavia native moved to Rochester and joined the engineering program at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2011. She tried to become a member of the college’s long-standing formula car engineering team, but she didn’t feel connected in the male-dominated group.
