Fuel Pump Pressure: Optimal Flow Factors

All too often, technicians assume fuel pressure is “good” without actually measuring it. If the engine runs, they assume the injectors are getting adequate fuel pressure. If the engine cranks but won’t start, and they depress the service valve on the fuel rail and some fuel squirts out, then they assume the injectors have pressure.

VIDEO: Wiring Harnesses On New Fuel Pumps

Andrew Markel explains why you should install the wiring harness that comes with a new fuel pump, even if there is not a problem with the old one.

Automotive Fuel Pump Returns Stink. Literally

The same aroma of fuel that gets our adrenaline pumping at the local race track gives us a distinctly different feeling when we smell it at the front counter.

Subaru Pulse-Width Modulated Fuel Pumps

Many technicians aren’t familiar with PWM fuel pumps because they’re generally very reliable. But now that many import vehicles equipped with PWM fuel pumps are rolling up the miles, it’s time to turn the page from diagnosing two-line and single-line mechanically pressure-regulated fuel pumps to diagnosing electronically controlled PWM fuel pumps.

Automotive Fuel Pumps Continue To Evolve

On most applications, the pump runs at a constant speed (typically 3,000 to 7,000 RPM depending on the design). However, on many newer vehicles pump speed is controlled by the PCM and will vary depending on engine load and speed. The most common type of electric fuel pump today is the turbine style pump. An impeller ring with many small blades is attached to the electric motor inside the pump.

Tech Tip: Fuel Pump Float Arm Assembly

The float arm is shipped loose to avoid unnecessary damage and disruption during installation. The undamaged float arm assembly should be properly mounted to the fuel level sender before installing the pump module into the fuel tank.
