VIDEO: Winter Time Is Filter Time

Andrew Markel covers why changing filters before winter can keep the engine and driver healthy.

VIDEO: Oil Filter And Noise At Start Up

If you have a vehicle that comes to your shop with valvetrain noise at start up, the solution might be simpler than you think. Many engines have variable valve timing, these systems need to have engine oil to operate. If the oil drains from the top end of the engine, the actuators and lifters will make noise when the engine is started. The cause could be a damaged oil drain back valve in the oil filter.

Not Sure That Air Filter Needs To Be Replaced? Check The Fuel Trim

The kicker with trying to diagnose whether an air filter is affecting performance is to see if the long-term or short-term fuel trims have changed.

VIDEO: Using Replacement Intervals And Inspection To Sell Air Filters

Andrew Markel discusses how to recommend air filter replacement using the service interval schedules and inspection.

VIDEO: Air Management Systems: The Heart Of It All

Andrew Markel discusses the path that air takes through the engine, and how a clean filter is essential to the air management system’s maximum efficiency.

VIDEO: Can A Dirty Or Damaged Air Filter Cause Rough Transmission Shifts?

In this Maintenance Minute, Andrew Markel talks about how and why rough transmission shifts can be caused by the air filter and what some of the likely culprits are.

VIDEO: Air Filters And Mass Air Flow Sensor Contamination

Andrew Markel explains how a failing air filter can cause the contamination of the mass air flow sensor.

Air And Oil Filters: Can They Go The Distance?

Air filters and oil filters are the engine’s only defense against outside contaminants. What’s more, oil filters provide internal protection as well, trapping wear contaminants that are generated by the engine itself as well as tiny particles that might get past the air filter.

VIDEO: Does An Old Air Filter Weigh More Than A New One?

Andrew Markel shows how a dirty air filter can impact engine performance and even damage engine components.

VIDEO: Air, Oil And Fuel Filter Capacity And Efficiency

Air, oil and fuel filters are typically compared on efficiency and capacity. But, what do these numbers mean to the vehicle? Andrew Markel discusses what these numbers mean and what happens if a filter is left on a vehicle when the capacity has been exceeded.

Oil Bath Air Filters

Long before people started using cotton gauze air filters soaked in oil, the oil bath air filter was the dominant filter on the market. The filter removes debris in the air by running it over oil and a mesh element. These filters worked great when most roads were dirt, but they could be messy to clean.

Air Filter Show & Tell: Seeing Is Believing

Air filters are normal wear items that require regular checks and replacement. Their role is to trap dirt particles that can cause damage to engine cylinders, walls, pistons and piston rings. In fuel-injected vehicles, the air filter also plays a role in keeping contaminants off the airflow sensor.
