ASE Test Prep: Tricky True Or False (Video)

Just one word is all it takes to change the entire meaning of a question. This video is sponsored by FRAM.

Although most students prefer true and false questions, these types of questions can be tricky, and it is important that you pay very close attention to the details of each question before you mark your answer.

With true-or-false test questions, it’s not uncommon to have just one word make the difference as to whether the statement is correct or not.

Another helpful tip is to look out for qualifiers and absolute qualifiers. As these can provide clues to the correct answers. More modest qualifiers such as “sometimes” or “often” generally are more likely to equal a true statement while stricter qualifiers such as always, rarely, or never often mean a false statement.

Now that you know some of the things to watch out for, let’s see how you do with this True or False ASE G1 test prep question!

True or False. A clogged or extremely dirty engine air filter will never cause the check engine light to illuminate.

The answer is False. Remember to keep on eye open for words like “never” which I just used in the question. Albeit rare, a severely blocked air filter can trigger a check engine light on the dashboard. This is usually caused by one or more-cylinder misfires as the engine control module struggles to adapt the fuel delivery to match the low air flow. A severe reduction in air flow can also trigger mass air flow and mass absolute pressure sensor errors. These sensors are calibrated to deliver signals within specified ranges. An out-of-range air flow reading can trigger a check engine light to let you know that something is wrong with the sensor or in some cases the air filter element.
