From Brandon LaVorgna’s article on the Time Warner Cable News website:

For the last 4 years, classes have been full at Guilford Technical Community College’s automotive department. Instructors have helped trained thousands of mechanics and automotive specialists on their ways to obtaining a degree. However, this year, there are still some vacant seats that need to be filled.

Jeff Faircloth, the department chair for the Auto and Diesel Department said it’s a trade that will never fade away.

“As long as there are vehicles, as long as there’s transportation there’s going to have to be people to service those vehicles,” said Faircloth.

Instructor, Josh Gilbert was one of the many students looking for a non-traditional education about 15 years ago.

“I actually graduated from the program myself,” explained Gilbert.

Gilbert says he’s seen an increase of interest in recent years in skilled trade degrees. Part of the reason is the cost is roughly $8,000 for a 2 year program.

“Four year university and beyond is not for everyone,” said Gilbert. “There are great career opportunities out there in the skilled trades that are a lot of time being overlooked.”
