While other students at Lee Williams High School are busy reading or taking notes in class, students in Manuel Silva’s automotive class turn brake rotors and work on cars – and their careers.

“I teach with a 90 percent hands-on strategy,” said Silva. “If you want to learn to work on a car, you have to start turning wrenches.”

Silva’s hands-on strategy with his students is evident when you step into his classroom. On any given day, you’ll rarely see them sitting behind their desks. Instead, Silva and his students are in the garage next door working. Cars on lifts line the garage entrance, with cars parked just inside with their hoods up and engines exposed. Most days you’ll hear a student rotating a rotor in the back or Silva instructing students while underneath a vehicle.
