From Dom Pruett’s article on The Reporter website:

Among the many iconic scenes from 1982’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” is the one that shows Jeff Spicoli and his two friends toppling out of his red and yellow Volkswagen van with an accompanying swarm of smoke as the school bell sounds. Spicoli became the global patriarch of high school stoners and slackers, through his witty antics and lax demeanor in the coming of age classic.

And though his chariot makes only a handful of brief appearances throughout the film, it is considered just as influential as the man who drove it.

After Vacaville Auto Body Center owner Robert Skinner saw the film as a 16 year old in 1982, he was inspired to follow in Spicoli’s footsteps… or, rather, his vehicle of choice.

The next year, Skinner purchased a 1966 Volkswagen panel bus — and still owns it to this day. Since then, Skinner has made classic Volkswagen buses his passion, turning his shop into the undisputed mecca: the largest bus restoration shop in the country, to be exact.
