From Sammantha Larisch’s article on the Silver City Daily Press website:

Students from Silver High School’s auto shop have again been selected to compete at a national competition this summer in Louisville, Ky. The auto shop has been competing at state competitions for 15 years and competed at nationals 12 years.

The program “starts them in a career. It gets them ready for the industry,” said Santiago Arredondo, Silver High’s auto shop teacher. “As freshmen, they come in and they have no idea what they want, and they take the class because others said it was fun or an easy A, and then it gives them a direction.”

This year three students are able to go to nationals, with each competing in different events. Students compete in either a leadership skill set within the auto industry or in automotive mechanics such as collision body repair. The senior of the group, Kyren Salas, is a three-time state champion in the skills section of the competition, and this will be his second time going to nationals.

“I get to keep the legacy going,” Salas said. “The skills program gives good opportunity to students like us to get ready for the real world.”
