Those who can, teach. At least that’s the case for Toby Evans, program chairman and instructor for Lenoir Community College’s Automotive Customization Technology program.

Even at a very young age, Evan said he knew he was meant to work on cars. Growing up in the coal fields of West Virginia, Evans said he started learning how to work on cars while he was still in elementary school.

Starting his fifth-grade year, Evans spent each summer at a local vocational school, where he spent his days working on cars.

“By the time I was 17, I had been there so many times and had done so much, the instructor would leave the class to me while he went to get a cup of coffee,” Evans said. “Sometimes it took him a really long time to get that coffee.”
