Finish Line: Finals Held in 2011 National Automotive Technology Competition

Each month, Tomorrow’s Technician takes a look at some of the automotive-related student competitions taking place in this country, as well as the world. Throughout the year in “Finish Line,” we will highlight not only the programs and information on how schools can enter, but will also profile some of the top competitors in those programs.

During the past year, the National Automotive Technology Competition challenged hundreds of high school students throughout the U.S. and Canada by testing their skills and automotive knowledge in a hands-on setting.

The competition is sponsored by various dealer associations, and students train and are mentored in new car dealerships in their local communities.

Leading up to the national finals, which took place at the New York International Automobile Show on April 26 and 27, regional and state contests were held across the country to determine the nation’s best automotive students.

Twenty-nine student teams moved on to represent their region/state at the national finals in New York City. The top two-student teams for 2011 are:

First Place – Team Lexus: Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association:
School: Orange-Ulster BOCES, Goshen, NY
Students: Alex Gross, Daniel White
Instructor: Tony Gualtieri

Second Place – Team Mazda: Automobile Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee
School: Grafton High School, Grafton, WI
Students: Mitchell Sommerfeldt, Ryan Stauske
Instructor: Carl Hader

Third Place – Team Chevrolet: Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association
School: LoGuidice Educational Center, Fredonia, NY

New findings show that while vehicles may be safer, more capable of avoiding crashes and more environmentally friendly, advanced technology is contributing to costlier repairs, higher claims costs and longer cycle times. Additional factors, such as scheduling backlogs, have contributed to the 60% increase in the amount of time it takes for vehicles to enter repair shops after estimate completion, compared to pre-pandemic times.
