Ford Motor Company announced it is dropping all but two of its cars from its North America offerings by 2020 and shifting its focus to trucks and SUVs.
According to Ford, the company will only offer two cars – the Mustang and the all-new Focus Active crossover coming out in 2019.
“By 2020, almost 90% of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles,” Ford said in a press release. “Given declining consumer demand and product profitability, the company will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America.”
Ford also said it is is exploring new “white space” vehicle silhouettes, which combines attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility. Additionally, the company is committing to adding hybrid-electric powertrains to high-volume, profitable vehicles like the F-150, Mustang, Explorer, Escape and Bronco.
Ford’s will rollout battery electric vehicles in 2020 with a performance utility, and 16 battery-electric vehicles are expected to hit the market by 2022.
